Frequently Asked Questions

We get a lot of folks with old systems that simply want to reprogram them.  They don't want to buy any new equipment, because, if it works now, it will still work after a programming change.  This is true; however, in almost every case, we recommend the purchase of a new processor.

Here is our reasoning:  Axcent processors use the Axcess programming language, which is the origin of Netlinx, but Netlinx improves on almost everything, from the basic structure of the program and how feedback works, to the processor's interaction with controlled devices.  Asking a Netlinx programmer to go back to Axcess is like asking a famous chef to cook everything on a wood stove.  It can be done, but it is tediuous and time consuming, and you, as the client, will be paying us for this additional time.  So we'd rather sell you a processor upgrade and fewer hours, than charge you additional hours to make Axcess work.

There is, of course, a "break-even" point on every system.  This point is mainly processor dependent, though there are other factors:

1. Axcent3, Axcent3 Pro, NXF Card Frame, NXF-Mini Card Frame:
Upgrade process: Add an NI-700.  Connect to old system via Axlink (single wire). Remove Master Card (if NXF).
The break even point usually occurs around three hours of programming time.  So simple changes, like a projector swap, will not warrant a new processor.

2. Axcent, Axcent2:
Upgrade process: replace processor.
These processors do not have a "slave mode"; for these processors, whether or not a new processor is recommended will depend on the number of devices connected. And unfortunately, wiring wise, it is not a direct swap; all the connectors are different: large phoenix on the old to either small phoenix or db9 (rs232) on the new.

3. AXB-232++:
The NI-700 is a direct replacement for this processor.

In addition, there are other benefits of upgrading to a Netlinx processor.  A few of the high points are listed below:
1. Ability to add any current AMX touch panel (new panels will not work with old processors).
2. Ability to add an ethernet based touch panel (e.g. computer or iPad).
3. Ability to transfer programs using ethernet instead of RS232 (how many of you still have computers with RS232 ports?).
4. Ability to connect the system to AMX's Resource Management Suite.
